Hackulous Shuts Down Both Installous & AppSync

Hackulous has announced retiring both Installous & AppSync piracy apps forever.

The short message left by the Hackulous team on the website reads as follow:

Goodnight, sweet prince.

We are very sad to announce that Hackulous is shutting down. After many years, our community has become stagnant and our forums are a bit of a ghost town. It has become difficult to keep them online and well-moderated, despite the devotion of our staff. We’re incredibly thankful for the support we’ve had over the years and hope that new, greater communities blossom out of our absence.

With lots of love,
Hackulous Team

What do you think? Is this really why Installous and Appsync are shutting down? Or has Hackulous caved under the pressure of anti-piracy corporations trying to shut them down?

Either way, Apple should now consider making iOS 7 open source, and allow for tweaks to be sold in the AppStore rendering jailbreaks unnecessary. We’ll just have to wait and see.

4G/LTE in Lebanon, issues with iPhone 5 and other 4G capable phones

Screen Shot 2012-12-19 at 9.35.51 PM

Just a notice for anyone who is buying a 4G capable phone. If you phone is an iPhone 5 please make sure that its the European model (look on the back, the model should be A1429 NOT A1428, A1428 is the USA/Canada model and will not work on the 4G network that will be rolling out hopefully in April). If you are getting a phone other than the iPhone 5, make sure that the 4G/LTE band that the phone supports is Band 3 at frequency 1800 Mhz.

The reason for this is that Apple discovered that 4G networks are not created equally, in the sense that a 4G network must run on a reserved frequency (which costs money obviously to reserve it), so what Apple did is create 2 iPhone 5 models: A1428 and A1429. Model A1428 will work with 4G/LTE networks on band 4 and band 17 and model A1429 will work with 4G/LTE networks on bands 1,3,5,13, and 25. For anyone doubting my claim, please refer to this link from apple: http://www.apple.com/iphone/LTE/

Now that you know which model supports which bands, please direct your attention to this link which shows that Lebanon’s 4G/LTE network will use band 3: http://stateofmind13.com/2012/11/17/telecom-mobile-tv-and-lte-4g-in-lebanon/

Don’t believe retailers who tell you that this is just a ploy and that it is not true. I highly doubt that the minister would tweet what he tweeted (check picture) if it were not in fact true.

Moreover, iPhone 5 retailers have been claiming that the new iOS 6.0.2 firmware targeted especially for iPhone 5 fixes this 4G/LTE support issue. This is another hoax for two reasons. First reason is that this update is not just for iPhone 5, it is also for iPad mini, and not just for the 4G model, even the Wifi model, so one would ask why woul a 4G/LTE patch be released for a device that doesn’t even support cellular communication. Second reason is that if you would go to apple’s website and check the changelog for iOS 6.0.2 (a changelog is a file that tells users what is different in this new firmware), you would find that iOS 6.0.2 addresses a potential Wifi issue (a glitch actually that would cause iPhone 5 and iPad mini to disconnect from a Wifi network even when they are in range and already connected to that network).

Sorry for the long post, but I’ve had enough to retailers trying to cheat customers.

Finally, for all who already have an iPhone 5 with model number A1428, it is not the end of the world. The only implication is that you will not be able to connect to 4G networks except in USA and Canada, and that you will be restricted to the 3G networks (which should operate better and faster when 4G rolls out since some users who have a supported 4G/LTE capable phone will move over to 4G lessening the traffic on 3G networks :D)

All You Need To Know About The iPad mini

The iPad Mini is here. It’s a sleek, thin and light 7.9-inch tablet made of anodized aluminum and glass that follows the format reduction pioneered by Google and Amazon. This thing is really neat. Really light and thin at 0.68 pounds and 7.2 millimeters.

In a nutshell: it has better specs and it’s thinner and lighter than the Amazon Kindle Fire HD and the Google Nexus 7.

The screen

The iPad Mini has a larger surface than the Nexus 7 or the Kindle Fire HD: 7.9 inches vs 7 inches. Remember that this size is diagonal, so the difference is quite substantial. The area of the iPad Mini is smaller than the regular iPad, but it’s significantly larger than the panoramic Android 7-inch tablets. Here’s a comparison:

iPad Mini: Everything You Need to Know

In fact, the iPad mini’s screen has 35% more real estate than the Nexus 7.

The pixel resolution is 1024 x 768 pixels. It’s not as dense as the iPad 3 and 4, but at that size it will be much sharper than the previous generations.

One cool thing about the screen: it recognizes whether your thumb is resting on the display or actually using it. Clever.

Physical specifications

The iPad mini is an all anodized aluminum design, like the iPhone 5. The Google Nexus 7 is made of plastic, while the Kindle Fire HD has a rubberized back that is quite nice to grab. Like the iPhone too, it comes in black and white.

It’s quite light and thin. It’s comparable to a pad of paper, like Apple says: just 0.68 pounds and 7.2 millimeters thin. That’s 53% lighter than the fourth-generation iPad. It compares very favorably to the Nexus 7 (0.75 pounds and 10.4 millimeters).

iPad Mini: Everything You Need to Know

Connectivity

Some models come with LTE connectivity, like the Kindle Fire HD 8.9-inch. But that’s much more expensive. The comparable regular Fire HD and the Nexus 7 only have Wi-Fi.

It naturally comes with 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth (like Amazon and Google’s models).

Like all the latest iOS products, it uses a Lightning port too.

Guts

Basically, this is a reduced iPad 2. It uses the same dual-core A5 processor, and it probably comes with the same RAM as the old iPad: 512MB. Apple say it’s basically the same (or better) guts but in a reduced package (an exception is the cameras and the Lightning port). Both the Fire HD and the Nexus 7 come with 1GB of RAM. We will have to wait to learn how much RAM it has, though. Perhaps this has been upgraded too.

Storage

Like all the iPads, it comes in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB flavors.

Battery life

Apple claims a 10 hour battery life surfing the web on Wi-Fi, watching video or listening to music, using its 16.3-watt-hour rechargeable lithium-polymer battery.

The Nexus 7 is rated by Google at 8 hours. Amazon says that their Fire HD has 11 hours.

Cameras

It has a FaceTime HD camera, which is better than the one in the iPad 2. It’s comparable to the Nexus 7, which is 1.2 megapixels too. The iPad has a backside illuminated sensor and, like its older sibling, it supports Face detection.

Like the bigger iPad, it comes with a 5 megapixel camera on the back. This is something that neither the Nexus 7 nor the Kindle Fire HD have.

Price and availability

If you were hoping for a $250 starting point, brace yourself for disappointment. It starts at $329 for the Wi-Fi only version, with 16GB of storage. The 32GB and 64GB are $429 and $529. If you want the LTE connectivity, you will have to pay $130 more.

The Kindle Fire HD and the Nexus 7 don’t have LTE support at any price point (if you want LTE on the Fire HD, you have to get the 8.9-inch model, which is the competition to the iPad 4 starting at $499 for the 32GB model). On the Wi-Fi front, however, both Android tablets have a much better price, specially the Fire HD, which is $199 for the 16GB model. The $199 Nexus 7 will only get you 8GB.

You can start pre-order Friday, October 26, and receive the Wi-Fi version on Friday next week, November 2. The cellular versions will come first to the US, two weeks after that date. They will come later to the rest of the world (no announcement yet).

The iPad 2 remains at $399, by the way—the iPad 3 is gone, replaced by the 4th generation model at $499

CHPWN Jailbreaks iPhone 5 On Day 1!!!

It’s been a busy day in the realm of shiny iPhone 5 – The New iPhone launched today as well as jailbroken within hours by hacker. The talented iOS developer @chpwn, who is often known for developing jailbreak tweaks and applications successfully jailbroken iPhone 5 running on the latest build Apple mobile operating system – iOS 6.0.

Chpwn (Grant Paul) shared the news to the public by posting the pictures of jailbroken iPhone 5 running Cydia on it. The vulnerability and method used by the hacker is not for public consumption since the exploit discovered in iOS 6.0 is not legally distributive. And, in a reply on Twitter to another iOS jailbreak developer Stefan Esser, aka i0n1c, chpwn confirmed that the jailbreak was indeed genuine.

We are not sure whether he will release his own tool or will handover it to iPhone Dev Team (for Redsn0w) and Chronic Dev Team (for Greenpois0n or Absinthe). Still, lots of work is remaining before the exploit is packaged for public usage – From packaging to testing and making the cydia apps compatible with iOS 6.

Some people wanted the bottom row of text from Cydia, or a photo of the device itself: pic.twitter.com/T5mSNTNQ

Stay tuned for for news on iOS 6 jailbreak news as it happens 😀

Apple Announces iPhone 5 Media Event!

Apple, yesterday morning, sent out invites to a event taking place on September12 at San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in downtown San Francisco and is scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM Pacific / 1:00 PM Eastern. The invite says “It’s almost here.” The event believed to be the launch of their next-generation iPhone. Though the company hasn’t provided more details, Apple CEO Tim Cook is expected to announce the iPhone 5 at the event and show off its new features.

The date confirms a report from WSJ, Reuters, Bloomberg earlier this month, claiming Apple would be holding it on September 12, and matches up with a story from All Things Digital before that, which said Apple would be holding an event in the second week of September.

The next Apple operating system for iPad and iPhone devices, iOS 6.0, is also expected to be released the same day.

Downgrade 6.15.00 Baseband for iPhone 3GS / 3G Available!!

The iPhone Dev-Team has announced a baseband downgrade from the iPad’s 06.15 baseband on the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G.

Typically you’d have the 06.15 baseband if you unlock with ultrasn0w but updated your iPhone baseband past 05.13.04. With this new capability, you can now downgrade specifically from 06.15 to 05.13.04 (even if you never had 05.13.04 on that device before). This gives you the best of both worlds: ultrasn0w compatibility and a normal iPhone baseband with full GPS and the ability to use stock IPSWs again.

Steps:
1. Use the “Extras->Select IPSW” button in redsn0w to tell it which firmware version you have installed (new-bootrom 3GS users can usually skip this step but it doesn’t hurt for them to do it too).
2. Do a controlled shutdown of your iPhone (“slide to power off”). This step is very important to avoid mount problems when the ramdisk is running!
3. Go back to the first screen and click “Jailbreak”. Enable the “Downgrade from iPad baseband” checkbox, disable Cydia if you already have it installed, and click Next proceed through the normal DFU ramdisk steps.

Note: The “Flashing Baseband” step TAKES A VERY LONG TIME to complete (3-8 minutes).

Word of Caution:
For those who are wondering if you can update your 3G or 3GS to 06.15 solely for the purposes of downgrading to 05.13.04, the answer is “yes” for 3G owners, and “maybe” for 3GS owners. The iPad baseband is not compatible with 3GS units manufactured week 34 of 2011 or later. If you have an iPhone3GS and if digits 3-5 of its Serial Number are 134 or later (xx134…), then you should NOT try to install the 06.15 baseband on your 3GS! It will brick your radio, preventing both the downgrade from working and normal iPhone software from using it as a phone! Be warned!
