Official Apple Statement To iPhone 6 Plus Bending Issue

iPhone 6 Plus bend test

Over the past couple of days, reports surfaced claiming that the iPhone 6 Plus was getting bent while kept in their owner’s pocket. The issue, dubbed bend gate, blew up into a controversy, and Apple today officially responded to the issue in a statement.

Apple PR says that the bending issue is very rare during normal use, and that till now only 9 customers have complained about their iPhone 6 Plus being bent. The company adds that the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus “met or exceeded testing for strength and durability” thanks to steel/titanium inserts that reinforce stress locations.

Here’s Apple’s full statement:

Our iPhones are designed, engineered and manufactured to be both beautiful and sturdy. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus feature a precision engineered unibody enclosure constructed from machining a custom grade of 6000 series anodized aluminum, which is tempered for extra strength. They also feature stainless steel and titanium inserts to reinforce high stress locations and use the strongest glass in the smartphone industry. We chose these high-quality materials and construction very carefully for their strength and durability. We also perform rigorous tests throughout the entire development cycle including 3-point bending, pressure point cycling, sit, torsion, and user studies. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus meet or exceed all of our high quality standards to endure everyday, real life use.

With normal use a bend in iPhone is extremely rare and through our first six days of sale, a total of nine customers have contacted Apple with a bent iPhone 6 Plus. As with any Apple product, if you have questions please contact Apple.

Apple has instructed its support employees to replace bent iPhones once they passed ‘Visual Mechanical Inspection’ (obviously people who bent their iPhones on purpose will not qualify for a free replacement).

Do Not Update To iOS 8.0.1!

Apple released iOS 8.0.1 yesterday and as many users rushed to update in hope that this update will fix many bugs present in iOS 8, they were surprised to find that the update, in fact, broke Touch ID and cellular reception, resulting in a “no service” status that could not be resolved with an airplane mode on/off routine.

This problem was reported by users owning iPhones 6 and 6 Plus, while 5S users reported that their update process when just fine. So it seems this update only affected iPhone 6 and 6 Plus users, nevertheless, you’re probably better off waiting for Apple to investigate on what went wrong and fix it in the upcoming iOS 8.0.2 due in the next few days according to the statement Apple released (check it out here) shortly after pulling 8.0.1 offline.

Apple’s fix, for the time being, is simply to downgrade back to iOS 8.0.

iOS 8 released. Don’t Install It On iPhone 4S.

Even though Apple made the iPhone 4S capable of upgrading to iOS 8, you might want to think again after reading this article from Slate.

127990033-apples-senior-vice-president-of-worldwide-product

If you have an iPhone 4, you may be feeling kind of down, because today your phone becomes obsolete. It can’t handle running the new operating system, full stop. But if you have an iPhone 4S, you may be feeling pretty pleased. Your handset looks like a 4, but has Siri, a better camera, and the ability to upgrade and stay with the operating system pack. Apple says that the 4S is good to go and has even updated the 4S landing page to say that its standard operating system is iOS 8.

But don’t listen. I repeat: Wall yourself off from this madness. Your mission is to ignore.

Just thinking about the situation abstractly, it’s pretty clear that iOS 8 on the 4S is not a good idea. First of all, iOS 8 is optimized for big smartphone screens. Really big. The iPhone 6 has a 4.7-inch screen and the Plus has a 5.5-inch screen. Things are all right on the iPhone 5 and 5S’ 4-inch screen, but the iPhone 4s has a 3.5-inch screen. That’s two full inches smaller than the Plus. Come on now, how flexible can iOS 8 possibly be?

The other big issue is processing power. The new operating system is fluid, responsive, and packed with features. Unfortunately, none of that can run on people’s love of new Apple releases. Something has to crunch the 1’s and 0’s that make all of the animations and tools function. When the 4S came out in 2011, its dual-core A5 chip was definitely faster than the iPhone 4’s A4, but reviewers noted that added features like Siri were processor intensive, so the speed boost didn’t really translate to daily use.

Ars Technica confirms that upgrading the 4S to iOS 8 introduces speed and rendering problems. Plus, the 4S lacks a lot of the hardware that iOS 8’s snazziest features depend on. You won’t be able to use AirDrop, TouchID, Handoff, or Apple Pay even if you do update. “iOS 8 can add as much as 50 percent more time to the same task compared to iOS 7,” Ars writes. “The other problem is something that’s not so easily measurable: animations … are markedly more choppy and inconsistent in iOS 8 than they ever were in iOS 7” on the iPhone 4S.

Perhaps because it’s not in the spirit of technology’s progression to intentionally hold devices back, Ars writes that, “Despite the problems we ran into, we think the answer for most people will still be ‘yes’ ” when it comes to upgrading the 4S to iOS 8. It’s hard not to update when you’re getting notifications all the time, but I disagree that you should forge ahead no matter what.

If you have a 4S, it’s probably because it’s working fine and you don’t want to buy something new that you don’t need. This could be because you don’t have the money, you’re trying to make an ideological or environmentally-minded decision, or you just don’t care about smartphones. All of these are completely legitimate reasons to have an iPhone 4S. They are also all reasons not to risk the stability and usability of your phone for an update that basically just adds a few nifty extras.

You can do this. You can ignore all of those prompts to update and just stay on iOS 7. You can flout the societal pressure. It’s pretty weird that it exists anyway.

It’s safe to say that you’re better off upgrading to an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus if you have a 4S.

Apple Destroys Sales Predictions In Preoder Record

Apple has sold a record number of iPhones during its initial pre-order weekend sales, topping the charts with 4 million units moved between when it kicked off pre-sales early Friday morning and the end of the same day. The store experienced some technical problems owing to volume, but that didn’t stop the 6 Plus from selling out quickly, followed by the iPhone 6 later in the morning. Apple claimed a “record” number of preorders on September 12, before announcing the official total today.

That’s twice the number of pre-orders achieved in 24 hours by the iPhone 5 back in 2012, which managed two million pre-orders in its initial day of pre-sales. Apple didn’t publicly release pre-order numbers for the initial day of iPhone 5s and 5c sales last year, but estimates pegged them at somewhere around 2.2 million according to some analyst projections.

IMG_4208Apple starts selling the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus in its retail stores beginning September 19 at 8 AM local time, and in carrier partner stores plus authorized resellers. Launch countries this time around include the U.S., Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the UK. The following week, on September 26, Apple will open up sales to 20 additional countries, including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates.

Songs of Innoncence - U2

Apple released U2’s latest album “Songs of Innocence” for free for all iTunes users. While many appreciated the gesture, many were also annoyed at how this album just appeared in their playlist. But now there is!

Apple has released a tool that will do just that! Click on this link, but just before you go ahead with removing the album, just make sure to read the few sentences.

What To Look Out For When Buying An iPhone

It’s the time of year again when many people are scrambling to get their hands on the new iPhone. As most of you know, certain features are not available in every country, mainly Facetime. So before buying an iPhone, take a minute to check this link to make sure that your iPhone’s country of origin does not have restrictions that you did not know about.

Moreover, if you are uncertain which country your iPhone originated from, its quite easy to figure that you, just check the back of the box for the model number (look at the picture below to know what exactly to look for) and google it! You’ll immediately find out where the iPhone originated from.

And if the iPhone is unboxed, simply navigate to Settings > General > About and find the value next to “Model” and google that!

September 9, 2014 Apple Event Update

u2

The New York Times has confirmed a report from last week that claimed rock band U2 would be partnering up with Apple at its iPhone 6 launch event. According to the report, citing sources briefed on the plans, U2 will both perform at the keynote and “reveal an integration with Apple’s products that is connected to its next album, which is expected to come out by the end of the year.”

Apple has had a close relationship with U2 for the past decade, dating back to when the late Steve Jobs introduced a “Special Edition” iPod that came in red and black and had the signatures of the band’s four members etched on the back. Apple, through its acquisition of Beats Electronics, also added music pioneer Jimmy Iovine to its team, who long oversaw U2 at its record label Universal Music Group.

The details surrounding U2′s appearance, which is supposed to be a surprise, are still not fully known:

“Exactly what U2 will reveal on Tuesday, and how it is connected to Apple, is unclear, and people close to the band grew hushed and reluctant when pressed for specifics. Last week, when speculation about the band’s involvement began to circulate through the music industry, the best guess was that its next album would come installed on the iPhone 6. People close to the band dismissed that idea, but said that U2’s deal with Apple would involve the release of new music in an innovative way, and Apple’s event would partly serve as a big, splashy stunt to generate publicity.”

Apple has long shown an appreciation to older band such as The Beatles and U2, even at a time when the latter is struggling to find its place within the current pop landscape. While U2 is reportedly eager to release its long-delayed album later this year, the band’s last album sold a dismal 1.1 million copies in the United States upon its release in 2009. It will be interesting to see what the reception is to U2′s expected appearance at Apple’s event.
